Description

A place to read light, movement, and context

The Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal temple belt is one of Karnataka’s strongest heritage routes for photographers. Pattadakal is UNESCO-listed, Aihole offers dense early temple clusters, and Badami adds cave temples, sandstone cliffs, water edges, and old-town context. Together, the region gives a rich mix of architecture, landscape, sculpture, village rhythm, and archaeological storytelling. For photographers, the belt rewards slow work with light, texture, human scale, and comparisons between different temple forms.

Planning notes

Practical details for photographers

Best season / timing

October to February is generally comfortable for walking and outdoor heritage photography. Early morning and late afternoon provide warm sandstone light, softer shadows, and quieter sites.

Photography notes

Focus on stone texture, temple geometry, cave entrances, cliff context, human scale, and quiet village movement around heritage spaces. Use wide frames for temple-in-landscape and longer lenses for carved panels, pillars, and compressed architecture.

Access / permission notes

Protected monument sites may have entry tickets and rules for photography, tripods, drones, or commercial use. Check ASI/local site rules before shooting. The three locations are spread out and require route planning.

Safety notes

Be careful on stone steps, cave approaches, uneven paths, and cliff viewpoints. Avoid touching carvings or entering restricted areas. Carry water and sun protection.
