2026 edition: 17 November 2026 – 24 November 2026

The fair is usually held in October or November around Kartik Purnima. Arrive several days before the main religious culmination to photograph livestock camps, traders, camel decoration, and quieter documentary scenes. Early morning offers soft desert light, silhouettes, camp activity, and animals moving through dust. Late afternoon is strong for portraits, performances, and warm backlight. The final pilgrimage days are significantly more crowded.

Festival overview

A living ritual calendar for documentary photographers

Pushkar Camel Fair, also known as Pushkar Mela, is one of Rajasthan’s most visually distinctive annual gatherings. Traditionally linked with livestock trading and Kartik Purnima pilgrimage, the event brings camel herders, traders, pilgrims, performers, craftspeople, and visitors into the desert town of Pushkar. The fairgrounds feature decorated camels, livestock activity, cultural competitions, folk performances, markets, and large public gatherings. Around Pushkar Lake, the atmosphere shifts toward pilgrimage, ritual bathing, prayer, and religious processions. For photographers, the strongest stories often come from the interaction between desert livelihoods, animal culture, pilgrimage, tourism, and the rapidly changing character of the fair.

Planning notes

Practical details for photographers

Photography notes

Work early around the livestock grounds before tourist activity becomes dominant. Wide-angle lenses are useful for environmental scenes, while 35mm to short telephoto focal lengths work well for portraits and layered fairground activity. Avoid staging handlers or animals in unsafe ways. Ask before making close portraits, especially inside temporary camps. Separate the livestock-fair story from the Pushkar Lake pilgrimage story, as they have different rhythms and sensitivities.

Access / permission notes

Pushkar is reached by road from Ajmer and Jaipur. During the fair, traffic restrictions and heavy congestion are common, and accommodation can sell out well in advance. Livestock areas may move or change layout from year to year. Some performances and competitions may have controlled viewing areas. Confirm event schedules locally because programme timings can change.

Safety notes

Maintain distance from camels, horses, and cattle, especially in crowded trading areas. Dust, heat, uneven ground, and moving animals can damage equipment or cause injury. Keep gear secured in dense crowds. Around Pushkar Lake and temples, dress respectfully and follow photography restrictions. Do not photograph private bathing or prayer moments without consent.
