Festival overview

A living ritual calendar for documentary photographers

Pandharpur Ashadhi Wari is one of India's most visually powerful living pilgrimage traditions. Warkaris walk for several days and weeks from towns including Alandi and Dehu toward Pandharpur, accompanying the palkhis associated with Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram. The journey unfolds through villages, highways, rain-soaked fields, temporary camps and roadside resting points before culminating around the Vitthal Rukmini Temple and Chandrabhaga River. Saffron flags, white Gandhi caps, tulsi plants, cymbals, drums, devotional singing and collective walking create a layered human story of faith, endurance and community.

Planning notes

Practical details for photographers

Photography notes

The strongest documentary stories are found along the walking route rather than only at the final temple gathering. Photograph tired feet, rain-soaked clothing, elderly pilgrims, families walking together, saffron flags against monsoon skies, roadside meals, medical care, night camps, devotional singing and the scale of moving dindis. Work slowly and respectfully; avoid treating vulnerable pilgrims as spectacle. A 24–70mm lens is useful for environmental storytelling, while a 70–200mm lens helps isolate expressions within dense processions.

Access / permission notes

The Wari is a moving pilgrimage rather than a single fixed event. Photographers should select one route section or travel with an organised dindi after receiving permission. Alandi, Dehu, Pune, Saswad, Lonand, Wakhari and Pandharpur are common documentation points. Roads may close or become heavily congested near the procession.

Safety notes

Expect monsoon rain, slippery roads, long walking distances and extremely dense crowds near Pandharpur. Carry waterproof protection, drinking water and minimal equipment. Do not block the palkhi route, walk backward in front of moving groups or enter controlled temple zones without permission.
