Planning notes

Practical details for photographers

Photography notes

Focus on Losar as a living community celebration rather than only photographing colourful performances. Look for monastery rituals, prayer lamps, traditional clothing, family gatherings, musicians, dancers, festive food, decorated homes and the evening Metho procession. Early morning monastery scenes can provide quieter, atmospheric frames, while public celebrations offer opportunities for layered documentary compositions. Ask before making close-up portraits, especially during religious ceremonies.

Access / permission notes

Public celebrations and outdoor performances are generally suitable for photography, but ask permission before photographing people closely, entering homes or photographing private/community spaces. At monasteries and sacred sites, follow local instructions and avoid photographing restricted rituals or prayer areas without permission. Photography should never interfere with prayers or ceremonies.

Safety notes

Losar takes place during Ladakh's winter, so expect very cold conditions and prepare with warm layered clothing, gloves and weather protection for camera equipment. Leh is at high altitude, so allow time to acclimatise before demanding outdoor shoots. Carry spare batteries because cold temperatures reduce battery performance. Keep equipment protected from dust and sudden weather changes.
