Planning notes

Practical details for photographers

Photography notes

Use the festival as a story about people, culture and heritage, rather than simply photographing the monuments. Look for the Janapada Kalavahini folk procession, traditional dancers and musicians, performers preparing backstage, audience reactions and interactions between visitors and local communities. The illuminated Virupaksha Temple and Stone Chariot can provide strong environmental frames after dark. Traditional wrestling and stone-lifting events can add a more raw documentary element.

Access / permission notes

Most public festival areas can be photographed, but ask permission before making close-up portraits of performers or photographing private/backstage areas. Respect restrictions around temples and religious ceremonies. Do not obstruct processions, performers or visitors while photographing. If photographing organised performances from restricted areas, follow instructions from festival staff.

Safety notes

Hampi involves considerable walking across uneven terrain, rocks and heritage-site paths. Wear comfortable footwear and carry water. Festival evenings can become crowded, particularly around illuminated monuments and major performances. Keep camera equipment secure in dense crowds and avoid climbing or standing on protected monuments for photographs.
